Ka-Blam or not Ka-Blam?

Fri Sep 4, 2009, 6:23 PM

OKAY! I'm in the process of researching more efficient ways to print up the continuing MCL chapters and have heard of Ka-Blam Digital Printing, which specializes in comicbook printing.

I know that there are at least a few peeps that watch me on DA that have used it, care to share your info/experiences with Ka-Blam? Am really interested about quality, customer service and such, as the prices are really good compared to what it'd be to print it myself via Staples and assemble it by hand (which would be a complete pain in the ass if I working with a starting run of 50+ copies >,< D'OH!! )

So yea...any input would be great...or at least suggestions for other comparable places (excluding Lulu.com, as their pricing leaves no room for profit! >,< UGH!)

Thank you muchly! :D

Once again...Commissions are closed until further notice...aka...till I have time again to do them.^_^;

I read a great blog post on Ka-Blam a little while ago: [link]

Hope that helps. It'd be great to be able to continue to read MCL!

I think it depends on whether or not you're doing color interiors or black and white... I've had friends with positive and negative experiences with kablam! - mostly my wariness on them would be regarding their turn around time, which near conventions can be worrisome.

As far as Lulu goes - I've seen some poor interior art quality come out of there, as they are in essence a POD book printing company and not a comics printer.

When I get things printed, I go through a private small press printer called APEX. I priced it out on a book (using Kablam and a few others) and found that they were only $20 more than Kablam, and the reason for that is they send a proof to you ahead of time on the first run of a book. (Subsequent runs cost only book and shipping costs, which put them in at cheaper than Kablam)

The customer service is going to be superior on a small place like that. I like Apex because they do it ALL in house, so my sales rep can go yell at the pre-press department when review our proof.

If you're interested, they are here:

It'll be all b&w interior art with colour cover, so yea, helps keep the pricing down for sure! :D Since I've worked with prepping art for printing in b&w, I've plenty of expertise on what works and what doesn't with b&w work, so am all set there...the one thing I've noticed is exactly that! Their turn around time is FAR longer than I had expected, but if I plan ahead well enough, I think I can make it work...and it'd keep me from waiting till last minute to get everything done as well XD;;;

Yea, same here for Lulu...that and the base pricing is RIDICULOUS even for a 32 paged comic! >,< so yea, no way I'm working/printing with them :P

Apex looks pretty good...but I think I like how Ka-Blam specializes in comicbook printing as oppose to general all around printing. THanks anyways! ^_^

No problem. ^_^

Let me know how Ka-Blam does with your order, I'll be curious to see their long-term track record.

I've used Lulu for my b/w printings of SkyFall, but now that my next one is going color I decided to give Ka-Blam a try. The prices seemed very reasonable (especially for color) and the quality looks good. You could always do a single order of the proof copy and see how it looks before you release it?

A university class I took once did some printing through it for our final project (it was a sequential art class). While I didn't deal with them personally I've been impressed by the quality of the finished project. (I own that and also another comic printed by an online artist--impressed with both.)

Would it be helpful to you if I tried to get photos or a scan of either of the products?

Thanks for the input dear! :D

Tis definitely great to hear so far that Ka-Blam is a good place to get comics printed ^_^V

Actually, they do have an option to order a sample of their printing products, so I can easily do that, so no worries about scanning and getting photos...thanks aways! :D<3

I know :iconjollyjack: does all his at Lulu, and they come out great. The one time that there was a printing error, Lulu straightened it out real fast. I was impressed with their customer service. And the quality of their work is very nice for comics.
